Transport

For many walkers public transport seems to be the most popular means of accessing the route. The main town to head for is Stranraer which is just 6.5 miles from Portpatrick with a regular bus service and ample taxis available to get you to the start.

The following will hopefully assist you with your planning:


 How to get to...  Portpatrick (Stranraer)

Stranraer is the nearest main town to the start of the route at Portpatrick. Head for Stranraer and then a short taxi or bus ride will get you to Portpatrick (approx 6.5 miles). If you are travelling by train then get the train to Glasgow, then down to Stranraer - see below.

Alternatively if you are traveling from the south you can get the bus or train to Dumfries, then National Express to Stranraer/Portpatrick.

By Air
If you are flying into: -
Edinburgh - Head from Glasgow then train to Stranraer.
Glasgow or Glasgow Prestwick - Train to Stranraer.

Train - There are several daily trains from Glasgow. One direct train daily (Monday to Saturday) from Newcastle and Carlisle. Timetable from Scotrail. T: +44 (0) 345 484950.

Bus - Buses run from various UK locations. Timetable from National Express. T: +44 (0) 990 808080.

Car - A74 (M74) to Carlisle and Gretna - A75 to Stranraer - A77 to Portpatrick.

Ferry - There are regular sailings from Larne to Stranraer / Cairnryan and timetables are available from Port of Larne. T: +44 (0) 990 980777.

Leaving from Cockburnspath

Many walkers depart the route on their final day either travelling directly home or going on to Dunbar for a final nights stay.

Bus - Upon completion of your walk on the last day there is a local bus which takes you to Dunbar, this leaves from the bowling green at Cockburnspath.

Traveling by By Car

Please note that there is no public transport direct from Cockburnspath back to Portpatrick making it difficult to leave a vehicle to return to without going via Edinburgh and Glasgow and then back down to Stranraer, then Portpatrick.

If walking the western section only you can leave a car at Moffat, bus down to Dumfries and then National Express to Stranraer/Portpatrick. Alternatively you may leave a car at St John’s Town of Dalry (Dalry) and we can provide vehicle support to Portpatrick and from Moffat returning you to your car at Dalry.

St John’s Town of Dalry

Bus - There are several buses that run to and from Dalry from Castle Douglas which can link to Dumfries (Rail Station available) or east, back to Stranraer.

Car - From A74 (M74) take the A75 east for Stranraer then take the A713 north for 18 miles approx.

Sanquhar

Train - Several daily trains from Glasgow one direct train daily (Monday to Saturday) from Newcastle and Carlisle. Timetable from Railtrack. T: +44 (0) 345 484950.

Car - A74 (M74) to Carlisle and Gretna - then A75 to Dumfries and the A76 to Sanquhar.

Moffat

Bus - Buses run from various UK locations. Timetable from National Express T: +44 (0) 990 808080.

Car - M74 to Carlisle - A74 to Moffat.

Bus - From Edinburgh - Lowland Scottish Service No.62 from St. Andrew's Bus Station in the city centre. Buses normally leave every hour - journey time about 1 hour 20 minutes. T: +44 (0) 1896 752237.
