Transport
For many walkers public transport seems to be the most popular means of accessing the route. The main town to head for is Stranraer which is just 6.5 miles from Portpatrick with a regular bus service and ample taxis available to get you to the start. Try our 'Journey Planner' to help you with public transport. For
walkers wishing to drive here and requiring assistance to get to and from their
vehicle we offer a transfer service across the western section, The following will hopefully assist you with your planning: Stranraer is the nearest main town to the start of the route at Portpatrick. Head for Stranraer and then a short taxi or bus ride will get you to Portpatrick (approx 6.5 miles). If you are travelling by train then get the train to Glasgow, then down to Stranraer - see below. Alternatively if you are traveling from the south you can get the bus or train to Dumfries, then National Express to Stranraer/Portpatrick. Leaving from Cockburnspath Unfortunately there is a lack of accommodation at Cockburnspath and most walkers are required therefore to depart the route on their final day either traveling directly home or going on to Dunbar for a final nights stay. Bus - Upon completion of your walk on the last day there is a local bus which takes you to Dunbar, the last bus usually 16:45 hours - alternative taxi approx £10.00. From Dunbar there are regular (approximately every hour) trains to Edinburgh, Newcastle or Berwick. Timetable from GNER. T: +44 (0) 345 225225. Traveling by By Car Please note that there is no public transport direct from Cockburnspath back to Portpatrick making it difficult to leave a vehicle to return to without going via Edinburgh and Glasgow and then back down to Stranraer, then Portpatrick.
